Larry Doby broke the American League color barrier 68 years ago today in Chicago, where the Cleveland Indians were in town to play the White Sox. As a kid growing up in Chicago, I was a White Sox fan. Larry spent some time on the White Sox. I remember one game, I think in 1956 or 1957, when he hit two Home Runs against the Red So, helping my favorite player in those days, Billy Pierce, get the win. I got to know Larry in 1974, after I was traded by the Yankees the Indians, where Larry was the First Base coach. He was a Hall of Famer on and off the field – a wonderful man, nice, charming, and always helpful to his players. I was very fortunate to have him in my life, and I miss him.
